A female bicyclist collided with a sedan on April 17, 2010 in the UTC area of San Diego, just east of La Jolla and the University of California at San Diego. The 24-year old woman was cycling on Genesee Avenue at La Jolla Village Drive near Westfield University Towne Centre at 11:50 a.m. when she was hit by a 2004 Infiniti sedan. The bicyclist suffered major head injuries and was taken to the hospital. The injuries are said to be not life threatening. However, whenever one suffers a blow to their head, it is possible that they have suffered a traumatic brain injury and should watch closely.
The roads were closed for about three hours for investigation purposes. The involvement of alcohol has been ruled out and investigations are on to find the cause of the accident.
Our office wishes the female bicyclist a quick recovery and a healthy life ahead. As we stated earlier, of all the reported injuries to the bicycle rider, the possibility of a serious brain injury is the most concerning. Cyclists are always more prone to such dangers because they, like motorcycle riders, do not have the benefit of an outside structure to protect them from outside forces. Drivers must be more vigilant when they are around cyclists and pedestrians, who are more vulnerable than others who share the road with motorists.
